Lorne Primary School aims to provide high quality learning and teaching in a safe and nurturing environment, leading to success for all.

Values –

Diversity

Equality

Achievement

Respect

Rules

The rules at Lorne are;

  • Ready
  • Respectful
  • Safe

The rules are easy to remember and contribute to the ethos of the school. We regularly revisit what it means to be Ready, Respectful and Safe in and around school.

Staffing

Miss Smith (PE teacher) will be leaving Lorne, her last day will be Tuesday 5th November. Ms Smith has been offered a PE post at Echline Primary School which is close to where she and her family live. Ms Smith has worked at Lorne for 13 year and we want to take the opportunity to wish her all the best in her new school and to thank her for all the hard work and support throughout her time here at Lorne.

We are currently advertising a full time permanent Principal Teacher post. We hope to interview for this post in 2 weeks time and have someone in post by Christmas. School will then move forward with 2 Principal Teacher posts at Lorne.

Miss Ferguson has started with us in Primary 2 full time and is really enjoying getting to know the children. We are delighted to have her as part of the Lorne team.

Maths Week Scotland/Number Talk

Maths Week Scotland was a busy week where the Lorne community enjoyed spotting ‘numbers in the wild’, learners participated in maths challenges/activities outdoors, learners challenged themselves on Sumdog and so much more. We revisited all of the learning in a Maths Week Scotland assembly at the end of the week.

The Numeracy and Mathematics Working Group have uploaded videos to YouTube to support Number Talk at home for this block. Have a look at the videos that may support your child.

Parent Council

The next Parent Council Meeting will be on Monday 4th October at 6.30pm in the Primary 7 classroom. The Parent Council organise school events, support the school with fundraising and explore school improvement with staff. Your help is greatly appreciated.

The Parent Council meetings are child friendly, children can be brought along and watch a movie in a classroom. We look forward to seeing you there!

Halloween Disco

Our Halloween discos on Monday 28th October were a great success. The corridors and gym hall looked fantastic, the home baking was delicious and the children all looked fantastic in costumes/face paint. A huge thank you to the Parent Council, parent volunteers and staff for making this such a successful evening.

Edinburgh Primary school Open Day

We thoroughly enjoyed inviting families into school on Wednesday 30th October. The House Captains and Vice Captains did a wonderful job of touring families around school and sharing aspects of Lorne school life. They made us all very proud.

Story Sacks

We are excited to share the news that we have been awarded £2,000 from the ‘Harper Collins Literacy Project:  Indie Thinking’, in collaboration with the Edinburgh Book Shop, to fund the creation of 50 Story Sacks for children in our Nursery and P1 classes – for them to be able to borrow to share with their families at home each week!  We would love to involve our parents and carers in the selection of appropriate books (fiction and non-fiction) and related activities (toys or games) to put into each sack, and invite any Nursery or P1 parent to come along on Wednesdays throughout November from 2:20-2:50pm in the school library (Learning Hub) to help us choose and make up the contents of the sacks.  A letter will be coming out this week to sign up for this:  we would like as many of you to be involved as possible.

‘Coorie In’

We are also delighted to announce the return of our popular ‘Coorie In‘ club for children in P1, P2 and P3, and their families.  This term ‘Coorie In’ (in which we share a story and do some craft) will take place on Wednesdays after school, from 3:00-3:30pm in the school library (Learning Hub).  All those with children in these classes are welcome to join us – you don’t have to come every week, just drop in when you can – younger siblings welcome too!

Reading for Enjoyment

Finally, we are planning to host an after school event to celebrate the fun we can all have with books, on a Friday afternoon towards the end of November (date to be confirmed), at which we hope to:

  • share with you one of our Reading Café sessions (a big one!)
  • have a ‘Coorie In’ for children of all ages and their families
  • have a local author and/or storyteller

Watch this space for more information over the next couple of weeks…

Arriving/Collecting

Please remember that the playground is unsupervised in the morning before school. The teachers will arrive on the playground to collect children at 8.55am.

At the end of the school day, the Primary 1 and 2 children should be collected on the front playground at 2.55pm. Primary 3 children should be collected at 3.20pm. Primary 4-7 children are dismissed at 3.20pm. Please ensure that your child is aware of arrangements for collection or making their way home (P4-7).

Parking Outside of School

Please can you ensure that you park safely around school if you are driving to drop off/pick up. Neighbours are reporting double parking and cars being left running. It is important that all learners are safe coming and going from Lorne and we appreciate your support with this.

School Uniform

Having pride in being a Lorne learner is an important part of our school and it is great to see so many of our children in their school uniforms. All children should wear school uniform Monday to Friday. Jumpers, cardigans, fleeces, white polo t-shirts all with the Lorne Primary School badge and house gym t-shirts can all be purchased online at;

Twitter

Lorne Primary School is on Twitter. We can be found @LorneSchool. On Twitter you can find out about exciting things that are happening in school, we are also trying to ensure that important dates and events are shared too.

Attendance/Lateness

We are closely monitoring attendance and lateness and will do this over the session. A reminder that if your child is late to school, please sign them into school at the front entrance.

Parent Pay

We are absolutely thrilled with the number of families that are now using ParentPay. Meals should be booked via ParentPay. Meals need to be booked by midnight on Wednesday the week before you would like your child to have school meals. Please come to school if you would like further assistance with this.
